Students Learn Cooking for Life Skills and Independence

At OLHMS, cooking lessons aren't just about food—they're about teaching kids important skills and how to do things on their own. With teachers' help, students learn how to use their hands well, do things in order, understand numbers, work with others, and manage their homes.

During a recent cooking class with the CASE program, students made yummy strawberry banana smoothies celebrating National Strawberry Day. They learned why it's important to clean fruits and cut them safely. Teachers showed them how to do these things safely and keep everything clean.

"It's not just about making a smoothie; it's about feeling confident and being able to do things by yourself," said Mrs. Messina, who led the class. "Students learn more than just cooking; they learn about being clean and following instructions."

During the class, students did many things on their own, like cutting fruit and following the recipe. Teachers helped with measuring and making sure they did everything correctly.

These cooking classes are more than just fun—they're important for kids to learn to do things on their own. By doing these activities, students gain confidence and skills they can use in other parts of their lives. This is all part of OLHMS's plan to help students grow in every way.
