Students at OLHMS Get Ready for Big Test

In preparation for the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) test, students at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School (OLHMS) have embarked on a comprehensive journey of preparation, encompassing various strategies to ensure success.

To kickstart their preparation, students engaged with the IAR Readiness Tool, familiarizing themselves with the test's functions and layout. This hands-on approach allowed them to navigate the assessment with confidence and ease when the time came.

Test-taking strategies were also at the forefront of their preparation. Students diligently reviewed techniques for effective time management, question analysis, and elimination of answer choices. Armed with these strategies, they felt better equipped to tackle the challenges presented by the IAR test.

Recognizing the importance of maintaining focus and composure during testing, students incorporated mindfulness practices into their routine. Through mindfulness exercises, they learned to stay centered and calm, ensuring optimal performance during the test.

Practice tests in both Language Arts and Math played a crucial role in their preparation journey. Students tackled these tests with determination, honing their skills and identifying areas for improvement. Following each practice test, students eagerly reviewed their answers with teachers, gaining valuable insights and refining their approach.

The practice writing test served as another milestone in their preparation. Students embraced the opportunity to showcase their writing skills, carefully analyzing scoring rubrics and exemplar essays to understand the criteria for success.

Incentivizing preparation, OLHMS implemented a raffle system to reward students for their dedication and effort. Those who demonstrated punctuality, focus, and exemplary effort during practice sessions were entered into the raffle, motivating them to stay committed to their preparation.

A highlight of their preparation journey was an all-school assembly featuring Harper Grace, a renowned motivational speaker and rising country singer. Harper Grace's inspiring message about perseverance, giving one's best, and believing in oneself resonated deeply with the students, further fueling their determination to excel in the upcoming test.

As the day of the IAR test approaches, students at OLHMS stand ready, armed with a comprehensive toolkit of preparation strategies and a resilient mindset. With their dedication and determination, they are poised to tackle the challenges of the test and showcase their academic abilities to the fullest.
