From September 15 to October 15, Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School is honoring Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of meaningful, hands-on activities in the library. Led by Media Specialist Heather McCarthy, the celebration highlights the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of people whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.
Inside the library, students can explore a special book display featuring Hispanic authors and characters, scan QR codes to learn more about Hispanic heritage, and dive into interactive activities through Google Arts & Culture. In the MakerSpace, students are crafting colorful tissue paper flowers and traditional Ojos de Dios while also enjoying podcasts and a themed photo booth. What makes this celebration unique is that students helped design the displays and activities, making the experience truly collaborative.
“Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month gives our students the chance to see themselves reflected in our school community and learn more about the cultures of their peers,” said McCarthy. “Our library becomes a space where students not only read about history and culture but also actively participate in it.”
Through these activities, OLHMS students are not only celebrating Hispanic heritage but also building pride, empathy, and respect for the diversity that strengthens the school community.
