The OLHMS library came alive with creativity and reflection as students honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students created MLK pixel art, colored a large mural while listening to his speeches, and even began building a LEGO mural of Dr. King. Students also explored powerful MLK quotes, discussing what his words mean in their own lives. A special book display featuring biographies and civil rights stories encouraged students to read and learn more. In the spirit of MLK Day as a Day of Service, students completed mini service-learning projects and discussed ways they could give back over the weekend.
As Mrs. McCarthy shared, “Libraries are places where stories shape understanding…one person’s story, grounded in justice and hope, can change the course of history.” Students agreed, with 8th graders noting that equality is an ongoing responsibility, and 7th graders sharing that courage, kindness, and justice are skills worth practicing every day.
