8th Grade Socratic Seminar

8th Grade Socratic Seminar

Eighth grade ELA students recently participated in a Socratic Seminar exploring the question: Which country was more justified in their actions in WWII reflecting on Pearl Harbor and the atomic bomb: America or Japan?

To prepare, students read a variety of informational texts in both ELA and Social Studies, analyzing multiple perspectives and building strong background knowledge. This made the seminar a meaningful opportunity to connect and apply their learning.

During the discussion, students demonstrated strong critical thinking and communication skills. They supported their ideas with evidence, listened respectfully, and built on one another’s points. Students asked thoughtful questions, challenged ideas respectfully, and remained open to differing perspectives. It was clear they were not only understanding the historical content, but also developing essential communication and reasoning skills.

Students performed exceptionally well and truly enjoyed the experience. They appreciated the chance to share their ideas and hear different viewpoints!
