OLHMS 8th grade students recently took a field trip to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, where they had the opportunity to explore a powerful and meaningful exhibit.

Prior to the trip, students read The Diary of Anne Frank in ELA class and studied the Holocaust in Social Studies, building important background knowledge and historical context.

During their visit, students experienced Anne Frank: The Exhibition, an immersive, full-scale recreation of the Secret Annex where Anne, her family, and four others lived in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The exhibit traces Anne’s life from her early childhood in Frankfurt, through the rise of Nazi Germany, to her family’s move to Amsterdam, where she lived for nearly ten years.

Students were able to step inside the carefully reconstructed Annex and gain a deeper understanding of the fear, resilience, and courage required to live in hiding. The experience also featured rare artifacts connected to Anne’s life, helping bring history to life in a powerful and memorable way. Overall, the trip was a meaningful extension of classroom learning, allowing students to make real-world connections and deepen their understanding of this important time in history.
