Rolling Around the Kolmar Gym

For the past few weeks, the energy in the Kolmar gym has been electric as 4th and 5th-grade students have laced up for a high-energy roller skating unit. This program, which has become a highlight of the upper elementary P.E. curriculum, offers students a unique opportunity to master a challenging new skill while focusing on core developmental goals like balance, bilateral coordination, and physical endurance.

The unit was made possible through the continued support of the District 123 Ed Foundation. P.E. teachers, Mrs. Kicho and Mrs. Lyman were awarded a grant to provide high-quality roller skates, ensuring that every student has access to the proper equipment to participate safely and confidently.

What truly sets this program apart is its commitment to inclusivity. To ensure every "Coyote" could join the fun, Mrs. Kicho and Mrs. Lyman collaborated closely with Ms. Rasche, Kolmar’s adaptive P.E. teacher. Together, they implemented specialized support systems, including the use of stability walkers for students requiring extra assistance. This partnership ensures that the gym remains a space where all students—regardless of their starting skill level or physical needs—can experience the joy of movement together.

The excitement reached a peak when Mr. Creech hit the floor to skate alongside the students, demonstrating that at Kolmar, learning and growth are a community-wide effort. Beyond the physical exercise, the unit has been a masterclass in resilience, as students cheered one another on through every stumble and success.
