Kate Ryan and students recognized by the Oak Lawn VFW
The Oak Lawn VFW annually recognizes the nation’s top classroom elementary, junior high and high school teachers who teach citizenship education topics regularly and promote America’s history and traditions effectively. Teachers who promote civic responsibility, flag etiquette and patriotism are prime candidates for this award. This year, Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School Teacher, Kate Ryan received the honor.
Ryan was honored in a ceremony on March 13, 2019, where she received a plaque recognizing her commitment to instilling patriotism in her students.
“I love teaching students anything having to do with Patriotism, I didn’t feel worthy of an award! The students were working hard on their essay submission for the Patriot’s Pen Writing Contest “Why I Honor the Flag” and it was so fun being celebrated amongst the six winners. This award is so special to me because it represents the lessons I am able to teach my students about our history, our heroes, our freedom, and our service to our country,” said Ryan.
Local Veteran, Lt.Col. Gordon Lohrman announced during his Veteran’s Day assembly speech at the middle school that he had nominated Ryan for the award.
