PBIS

Oak Lawn Hometown District 123 focuses on student achievement and success across all content and grade levels. One of the ways District 123 plans to support this expectation is by creating a safe and positive learning environment for all students. As part of the District Strategic Plan, each building will implement the Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) initiative. PBIS will teach district-wide PBIS expectations and rules: Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Safe. Each school will develop a plan to implement the teaching of social-emotional developmental skills, restorative practices, and cultural awareness within the school day for each student.

PBIS began at Covington School during the 2005 / 2006 school year and every school in District 123 began implementing PBIS in 2009 /2010. This initiative is a proactive, systemic approach to preventing and responding to classroom and school discipline problems. PBIS develops school-wide systems that support staff to teach and promote positive, appropriate behavior in all students. This process focuses on improving the positive behavior of all students. Emphasis is directed toward developing and maintaining safe learning environments where teachers can teach and students can learn.

All schools have an established Universal Team, which consists of an Administrator, Internal Coach, General Education Teachers, Special Education Teachers, and Support Staff. These teams work diligently throughout the year  to create a school-wide positive culture. Currently, these team members meet regularly to plan and review PBIS implementation such as creating cool tools (the behavioral lesson plans), plan student recognitions, review disciplinary data, and assess the effectiveness of interventions.

The District PBIS Team consists of one external coach and one internal coach from each building. This team works during the year to develop a plan for all schools to follow behavior response and behavior reflection forms. They meet monthly to communicate the success of PBIS in each school. This team plans district themes throughout the year to focus on unity, kindness, and respect. They also look at disciplinary data to drive direction of cool tools and monthly themes. The District PBIS Team also assists administrators in back to school PBIS training.
