The District 123 School Board of Education held their regularly scheduled meeting Monday, February 25, 2019. View the agenda.
Highlights from the meeting include:
OLHMS Robotics Club:
Brian Jurinek and the OLHMS Robotics Club presented this year’s underwater remote operated vehicle to the Board of Education. Through a Shedd Aquarium robotics program.
“The great thing about this program is that there are no expectations from the Shedd, just simply to try it. The day of the showcase there are scientists on hand, there are divers in the water all there as resources to the kids and help them with their ROV,” said Jurinek.
The group is made up of OLHMS 7th and 8th-grade students interested in STEM. They will participate in a club event in Chicago later this month, where they will text their ROV in the water, get expert tips from scientists in the field, and get to work with peers on the ROV.
Kolmar Student Council:
Kolmar Principal, David Creech, and Teacher, Colleen Koch presented this year’s Kolmar Student Council made up of 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students who want to help make the school a better place.
The Student Council is responsible for helping out with PTA events like Bingo Night, as well as assist in the pencil drive and winter clothing drive.
“It’s cool we get to make a difference in our school, we get to show the students what we’re doing, we decorate windows and get people excited for things that are going on in the school,” said Hannah.
“They help me quite a bit with morning announcements and to create buzz, so they are very helpful to me,” said Creech.
Superintendent Report:
During his Superintendent Report, Dr. Enderle encouraged the community to attend the annual State of the District Dinner. This year the dinner will focus on the District’s Strategic Plan. Attendees can expect to be immersed in learning about the draft D123 Strategic Plan, participate in a leadership panel presentation, and help by developing action plans to shape the future path for the students of District 123.
School Conferences are coming up on Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, 2019. District 123 utilizes a family conference method which puts the student in charge of the meeting. This model specifically helps students speak on the goals they are reaching and reflects the belief that students should be actively involved in learning. Through this method, students are held responsible for their learning and achievement.
Dr. Enderle introduced the upcoming Live Like Abby Walk-a-Thon on May 10. This year would have been Abby Wujcik’s graduation from Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School.
Abby was a 6-year-old student at Kolmar when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After 15 months of a courageous battle, she passed away at age 8. The walk-a-thon will take place during the Go Gray in May Day.
“We hope to inspire and empower our students and staff to inspire change and find a cure,” said Enderle.
The next Board of Education Meeting will be on Monday, March 18, 2019, at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School.
