CASE Coffee Talk: A Resource for Parents

CASE Coffee Talk

Hometown Elementary school recently hosted their first CASE Coffee Talk of the school year. The morning event is a resource for families of CASE students to get information in a casual conversational environment. This month’s talk focused on future planning.

“This particular topic was very significant in that it was, for some of the attendees, the first time they had heard about resources available to their children.  Some parents don’t learn about SSI, Home Based Services or the PUNS list until they attend transition meetings for high school.  That is much too late.  We want parents to be as informed as possible, as early as possible so they can get the services they need for not only their child with disabilities but for their entire family as well,” said Kristen Dunford, Supervisor of Special Education at Hometown School.

Parents express what topics they would like to hear about during the coffee talks and Dunford and her team then use that information to plan out topics throughout the year. The next Coffee Talk is being planned for sometime in the Spring.
