District 123 Board of Education Receives Statewide Award

Statewide Award

The Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Board of Education is one of only 19 school districts statewide to earn the Illinois Association of School Boards 2019 School Board Governance Recognition designation. The honor is designed to acknowledge those school boards that have engaged in activities and modeled behaviors that lead to excellence in the local school governance in support of quality public education.

This award is a testament to the entire board’s commitment, effective and open process, continuous improvement, and the principles of good governance. As a board, we hold ourselves to high expectations. We truly believe that it is through clear communication of purpose, strong focus on connection with the whole community, and close monitoring of district performance that we can continue to be successful in providing quality education to all students of the Oak Lawn-Hometown community. We are grateful to the IASB for recognizing our efforts in this capacity and look forward to continuing our work to promote quality governance on behalf of all of our constituents,” said District 123 School Board of Education President, Brian Nichols.

There will be a formal presentation of this recognition to the District 123 Board at the Fall South Cook Division Meeting. District 123 last received this honor in 2015 from IASB, previously the District has been recognized by IASB for their fiscal responsibility and transparency.

District GoalsMost recently the Oak Lawn-Hometown District 123 Board of Education has been praised for the efforts in developing and approving a new strategic plan for the district. The plan is broken down into for goals for the district; Whole Child Success, Active Learning, Operational Excellence, and Community Spirit. The board began work on the plan during the 2018-2019 school year and approved the plan in March 2019. A new plan provides a new layout of learning for the next five years in District 123 ensuring our students are the most engaged, and enthusiastic 21st-century learners.
