This week the Oak Lawn Hometown Middle School Garden Club put their green thumbs to work! The group made their way to the Oak Lawn Community Garden. The garden, located on 104th street behind the old Mcgugan property, is a partnership between the community and School District 123. to learn a bit more about the gardening process itself.
“Some of the things students have learned about are beneficial pollinators and the role they play in our food supply, and how to prepare a garden bed, plant and care for vegetables. We’ve also completed a winter seed-sowing project by making mini-greenhouses and successfully grew and transplanted several varieties of tomato plants, sunflowers, several types of milkweed and annual flowers,” said Club Director Deb Barry.
Once at the garden it was time to roll up their sleeves and harvest the ripened vegetables for donations to local food pantries and shelters. This week along they were able to gather more than 50 pounds of vegetables including, swiss chard, kale, and tomatoes.
