Eighth-grade students at Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School are currently studying the Civil Rights Movement, as part of their curriculum they are watching the Disney film ‘Glory Road’. The 2006 film directed by James Gartner, is based on a true story surrounding the events leading to the 1966 NCAA University Division Basketball Championship. Don Haskins portrayed by Josh Lucas, head coach of Texas Western College, coached a team with an all-black starting lineup, a first in NCAA history.
One of the film’s star’s Schin Kerr, stopped by OLHMS recently to share his story of how he starred in the film and his personal connection to his character, David Lattin. He encouraged students to follow their dreams, no matter what obstacles stand in their way.
“I want you all to learn from my mistakes that I have made and take notes because you do not have to make those mistakes. Stay focused on your dreams and goals and make them happen,” he said. It’s all up to you, the only way you’re going to get help in this world if you’re ready to step up and help yourself,”.
Students were inspired by his message and ready to tackle their final semester at OLHMS.
“He talked about resilience and bouncing back. The only person that is in control of your future is you. I think that touched a lot of us considering where we are with high school next year,” said Colin.
“Well it touched me when he said he couldn’t go D1 out of senior year because of his grades. Grades really do come first and if I want to be an athlete I have to remember that,” said Jaylin.
Kerr is now a business owner, in addition to running a non-profit organization, Brook Town Force, designed to help youth stay on the right track.
