OLHMS students write letter for the Write for Rights campaign by Amnesty International

Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School Students took part in the global Write for Rights campaign by Amnesty International. The premise of the campaign is to get people from all over the world to write letters for those whose basic human rights are being attacked.

“The Write for Rights campaign was started to empower the heroes fighting for basic human rights,” said 8th Grade Student, Nura.

Letters are then sent to either the politician or person in power allowing the injustice to happen or to the wrongfully accused who may be imprisoned for fighting for their rights.

Students in Mrs. Georgelos’ class hope their letters encourage those fighting for freedom, and those in power stop persecuting these people.

“I hope that this changes countries opinions and changes their rules to help the punished, I hope this also stops conflicts in these countries,” said John.

“It’s important to take action in this way because no one is going to listen to just one voice, with all of us writing in – we will be heard,” said Maya.

Last year, 5 million people took part in the Write for Rights campaign.
