D123 PTA Council Celebrates 2025 Helen Whalen Scholarship Winners

At the Helen Whalen Higher Education Annual Scholarship Dinner, three outstanding graduating high school seniors and Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 alumni were honored for their hard work and service to the community.

The Helen Whalen $1,000 scholarship honors the legacy of a devoted PTA member and President of the D123 Board of Education, who served School District 123 for four decades.

Jayden Cruz, Valente Ornelas, and Jacie Strelow, each graduating from Richards High School, were presented with the Helen Whalen Scholarship on May 5, 2025.

Jayden Cruz

Kolmar/OLHMS

Plans to Attend: Iowa State University, where he will study Chemical Engineering.

Most Inspirational Teachers:

  • Mrs. Candace Hines, OLHMS
  • Mrs. Yusra Maan, OLHMS

Jayden’s most memorable PTA event was the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. After learning the dangers of cardiovascular disease and how this fundraiser would help support the research of this disease, he wanted to become involved with helping collect donations. His participation in the Feed 6 Food Drive sparked his passion for helping people and volunteering in his community. During his time at D123, the PTA helped mold him into the ideal community member. He was taught the importance of helping those in need and putting others before himself. Through the PTA, he has learned lessons in collaboration, community service, and leadership.

Valente Ornelas

Sward/OLHMS

Plans to Attend: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he will study Systems Engineering & Design.

Most Inspirational Teachers:

  • Mrs. Lisa Opiola, Sward
  • Ms. Yusra Maan, OLHMS

Valente’s fondest Sward PTA event was a magic show. Seeing the gym filled with people of all ages enjoying moments of laughter and joy created a strong sense of community. As he became more aware of parents' and teachers' hard work and commitment, he developed a deeper appreciation for their efforts and dedication.

Jacie Strelow

Sward/OLHMS

Plans to Attend: St. Xavier University, where she will study to be a Music teacher.

Most Inspirational Teachers:

  • Mrs. Carey Jensen, Sward
  • Mrs. Heather McCarthy, OLHMS

Jacie’s most memorable PTA events were the book fair, where she discovered her love of reading, and the father-daughter dances. The PTA-sponsored Reflections program helped her pursue her passion for music. She submitted a song she wrote when she was seven years old. A parent heard this song and invited her to perform with his band at a PTA-sponsored family concert. This opportunity presented several more occasions where she was able to continue pursuing her passion for music.
