District 123 Students Honored with Girl Scout Bronze Award

Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 is excited to share that two students attending Hannum Elementary School recently earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. Their project reflects months of dedication to addressing food insecurity in the Oak Lawn community.

Over the past nine months, Isabella S. and Carlota R. have helped support more than 1,000 families through various food distribution efforts. Most recently, they assisted in providing Thanksgiving meals to over 200 families through their own planning and coordination. Their work required consistent volunteerism, thoughtful organization, and the application of many skills learned in the classroom, including communication, math, teamwork, and problem-solving.

“While academic performance and standardized measures are important, Isabella and Carlota’s service work shows how different learning styles, strengths, and talents can translate into meaningful real-world impact. As they complete their final year in grammar school, I hope their efforts can serve as a reminder of the value of recognizing a broader spectrum of student success.” — Judy S, Isabella’s Mother and Troop Leader

On Tuesday, December 9, the Village of Oak Lawn Board of Trustees honored Isabella and Carlota for their leadership and commitment to serving others. As the Girl Scouts represented their troop and school with kindness and pride, they were excited to be recognized for their major accomplishment. They are also looking forward to continuing their efforts in helping more people within the community.

“Now that we’ve reached the Bronze level, we can do more fun things and help feed more people while going for the next level, the silver award.” — Carlota
“It’s sad seeing so many people on the streets and hungry, and it’s a good opportunity to help others. One last thing I would say is to take any opportunity you have to give back to the community, because you never know when you will get that chance.” — Isabella
