Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Honors Veterans

Throughout the past week, schools across Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 honored Veterans Day in meaningful and creative ways. From all-school assemblies and special breakfasts with local veterans to classroom projects and presentations, students and staff came together to show gratitude for those who have served our country.

Hometown Elementary

On Thursday, November 6, Hometown Elementary proudly celebrated its annual Veterans Day Assembly, honoring local heroes who served in the United States Armed Forces. The gym was filled with red, white, and blue artwork as students performed patriotic songs, shared readings about the meaning of Veterans Day, and recognized each veteran in attendance with applause and gratitude.

Following the assembly, veterans and their families gathered for a special breakfast, sharing stories and smiles with their student hosts. The event was a touching reminder of the school’s deep appreciation for those who have served and its commitment to teaching students the values of respect, gratitude, and community.

Oak Lawn-Hometown Middle School

On Friday, November 7th, OLHMS held its annual Veterans Day Assembly to celebrate the dedication, courage, and patriotism of our country’s heroes. More than 35 veterans attended the event, warmly greeted by the OLHMS 8th Grade Student Ambassadors. After the Presentation of Colors from the Richards High School NJROTC, OLHMS students led the full gymnasium in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Audience members also enjoyed performances from the OLHMS concert band, concert chorus, and Sunrise Singers. Guest speakers Hometown mayor Frank Finnegan, Oak Lawn Mayor Terry Vorderer, and D123 SRO Craig Zelhart delivered heartfelt reflections on their military experiences, offering students and guests a meaningful look into the lives and sacrifices of Veterans.

Students honored the veterans in attendance by reading each of their names aloud and paid tribute to fallen soldiers through the Fallen Soldier Table presentation and the playing of “Taps” to conclude the ceremony.

Sward Elementary

Sward Elementary School proudly hosted its annual Veterans Day Assembly to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. The program, led by Sward’s Student Council, celebrated patriotism, gratitude, and community through music, poetry, and special tributes. In a touching moment, Mrs. Amra led the Pin Presentation, recognizing each veteran in attendance with a token of appreciation from the Sward community.

Following the ceremony, veterans and their families were invited to a reception held in the staff lounge, making the celebration even more meaningful.

Kolmar Elementary

On Tuesday, November 11th, Kolmar Elementary School honored veterans with a special all-school assembly. Mr. Creech opened the event and invited the chorus to lead students and staff in singing the National Anthem.

In an educational moment, members of the student council discussed the significance of Veterans Day and the importance of honoring those who have served our country.

The assembly concluded with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders joining together to sing a song of gratitude for veterans. In their classrooms, teachers led activities to help students further understand the significance of Veterans Day.

Covington Elementary

On Veterans Day, Covington Elementary hosted its annual assembly to honor veterans in the community. After a Covington teacher sang a special rendition of the National Anthem, students shared their own speeches and poems to recognize the hard work and dedication of those who have served in the United States Military.

A touching video honored the veterans in the school community, combining moving music with images of them in uniform to celebrate their service and dedication. The presentation offered a meaningful way for students and staff to reflect on the sacrifices and contributions of those who have served.

Hannum Elementary

At Hannum Elementary, kindergarten students received a special visit from veteran Mr. Conner, who shared stories about his time in the United States Navy. Students also learned about the significance of Veterans Day through classroom activities and stories in the library.

Early Learning Center

The youngest learners in District 123 also participated in Veterans Day-themed activities with art projects and wearing red, white, and blue. Students at the Early Learning Center learned about gratitude, kindness, and what it means to be a helper in our community.
