The Vacancy

The Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Board of Education is accepting applications to fill the vacancy resulting from the resignation of Dr. Peter DeRousse. District 123 will immediately begin an open application process for any qualified community member who would like to serve the children of our community in this capacity.

How Long Is the Appointment?

The appointed board member will not serve the remainder of Dr. Peter DeRousse’s term. Instead, he or she will serve from the date of appointment only until the April 6, 2027 consolidated election. Because the seat was filled at the April 2025 election for a four-year term, state law directs that an appointee serves until the next regular election rather than through the end of the term. At the April 6, 2027 election, voters will elect a successor to serve the balance of the unexpired term — a two-year term running from April 2027 through the April 2029 election.

Our Mission and Vision

The mission of Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 is “Preparing today’s learner for tomorrow’s world,” and the vision of the school district is “A dynamic and supportive environment that ignites lifelong learners who embrace diversity and contribute positively to our community and global society.”

Candidates should show familiarity with the strategic plan and school board policies regarding the general duties and responsibilities of a school board and a school board member, including fiduciary responsibilities, conflict-of-interest parameters, ethics requirements, and knowledge of gift-ban policies.

The Oak Lawn-Hometown School Board policies are available at link.d123.org/boardpolicy.
